The Spring 2016 Boston Calling Music Festival lineup blindsided music junkies and festival fiends this year with its eclectic choice of artists.
“It looks like a beginners festival,” said Hong Kong DJ Martika Mercer. “I’m excited to see Sia and Robyn should be fun, but it’s just different this year.”
Although some of the artists are quite popular others have not been in the music scene for years. This has sparked the curiosity of concertgoers.
Boston Calling is known for its quirky lineups but some think the artist selection is too whimsical.
“They are definitely changing it up this year,” said 88.9 WERS Program Coordinator Phillip Jones. “I’m excited to see Courtney Barnett perform…the festival is usually very indie and there’s a lot more EDM than I expected. I just feel like they are straying away from their indie roots.”
This year’s festival is definitely not lacking when it comes to big name artists. The electronic duo Disclosure, Australian singer/songwriter Sia and Swedish popstar Robyn are headlining this year. HAIM, Courtney Barnett, and R & B singer Janelle Mone’ will also be taking the stage.
One thing is for sure when Memorial Day weekend comes around City Hall Plaza will be filled with EDM and indie lovers alike. The lineup this year contains a varied assortment of artists but this won’t hinder the attendance of faithful Boston Calling goers.
“Oh yea I’d definitely still go! The lineup is kinda strange but I’d go,” said Mercer.
